Thanks Joy, but I completely disagree with that. The only wrangle I have with my editor is in making each book accessible to the newcomer. A lot of thought goes into it, and I believe we get it right.

Completely agree with John on the liteerary ‘experiment’ – it is a masterpiece. The only problem is that it rather spoils what has gone before for the newcomer to Skinner books.

Do you know the La Corto range? I particularly like the tinto – marvellous value for a soft but full bodied wine.

Borderline? No comment. For a brief period in my life, I was on the staff of the Daily Record, when it was a proper newspaper with a proper editor, and quality people like Ruth Wishart and Stewart ‘The Golden Bear’ MacLachlan carrying its banner. Part of me wishes I still was, so that I could resign, rather than be seen as a colleague of that man.
