One step closer
Like the rest of Scotland, I awoke to the news today that the Coalition is moving towards giving the Scottish Government the power to hold a binding referendum on independence, with both the timetable and the question on the ballot paper set by Westminster. Bring it on, Dave, the sooner the better.

Absit omen. Let’s hope Eck’s counter hacks it
The question of Scottish independence is a difficult one for me. I was born in England, I live in England, but I consider myself at least half Scottish and will, I hope, return to live there one day.
I don’t want the union broken up, but I do understand why, north of the border, it appeals to many as the best option. Which is why George Osborne’s remarks about the possibility of Scotland having to create their own currency or use the euro are unhelpful to the debate. He’s done an excellent job of turning a serious issue into childish threats and, at a time when Scotland calls out for freedom from pillocks in Westminster (Labour or Tory), his gamble is as likely to widen the chasm as it is to reduce it.
The currency of an independent Scotland is something to be carefully considered, it’s just a shame Osborne has chosen the tactic of scaremongering instead of taking the opportunity to show he understands and is actively addressing Scottish concerns.
Yeah, I know, that’s politics, I just live in hope that one day we will all have better politicians to vote for.
Osborne is living proof that a single human body can accommodate both a wise man and a fool. He’s a better Chancellor than many expected, but a lousy politician, as he proved with that intervention. Scotland’s future currency will not be a key factor in the independence debate however furiously the Tories stir the pot. We’ve always printed our own banknotes and that’s what most voters will see.
