When I joined the Tory staff in 1980, colleagues had Reagan/Bush bumper stickers on their staff cars. Some had been, or were in the US campaigning. Trump must know that.

Facts and truth do not matter to Donald Trump who is a pathological liar and sociopath. Just read what his former Chief of Staff John Kelly had to say about Trump being a fascist who desires unchecked power. He will do and say anything to stay out of prison. I can’t believe common sensical people will vote for this fraud and charlatan. If Trump,is elected which I don’t think will happen then the American people obviously don’t value decency and character and are not as exceptional as they think they are.
He may be all that, but he is the unchallenged Republican nominee and has been for three presidential elections. Sixty years ago I attended a debate in Glasgow University Men’s Union when a speaker declared, ‘The people of Glasgow Gorbals would elect my granny’s budgie as their MP if it was wearing a Labour rosette.’
I am less confident than you about the outcome.
Republicans and Democrats make up about 60 percent of the U.S. electorate which leaves 40 percent independent and Trump has done nothing to expand his base. I think the abortion issue is the elephant in the room. Women will decide this election and more women than men vote. Don’t underestimate the issue of the future of democracy being on the ballot. The predicted red wave in the 2022 Congressional elections did not materialize because of that concern.
We can but hope, but I have a feeling. I have friends in the US, small business Republicans. They will vote for him, and they are typical, I believe, of their group. If I was American I would want to see not only a Harris victory but also a big enough House and Senate majority to let the Democrats do something about the Supreme Court, possibly imposing six year terms on appointments.
I also note with satisfaction there are a lot of disaffected Republicans who are never Trumpers judging by the number of votes Nikki Haley received in primaries after she had dropped out of the race. Trump is also the greatest motivator for Democrats to actually bother to vote. Trump is probably the weakest candidate Republicans could have chosen. If, for example, they had selected Chris Christie I think they would have led this race by a wide margin.
I don’t know enough about it but my perception is that Christie is too far left to have a serious chance.
That’s the problem with the MAGA Republicans. You have to be to the right of Genghis Khan to win primaries because it is usually the extremists who vote in such elections to determine who the nominee will be. Even Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon would be considered too left wing by these folks. How else can you explain why someone as imbecilic as Marjorie Taylor Greene gets elected in Georgia.
