Weekend swarms

We have a traffic problem in East Lothian, one that I’ve mentioned before, and it isn’t getting any better. Cyclists. My son is one of them but when he goes somewhere on his bike, he’s on his own, unlike the swarms of enthusiasts who descend on us on any decent Saturday or Sunday, in groups that can be as large as thirty. They’re almost invariably male and too often they are lacking in consideration for other road users. They frustrate motorists to the point of recklessness and if a service bus comes up behind them then its driver is in trouble. I have a suggestion for the Scottish Government. Legislate to limit leisure cyclists to groups of three, maximum, class anything more than that  as a disorderly crowd and giv ethe police poweres to stop them and break them up. And here’s another proposal; any cyclist who ignores a light-controlled crossing should have his bike seized and fed into a crusher, or better still, exported to a third world country and given to someone who would put it to a useful economic purpose.

Just finished The Loner – brilliant read, love the twists and turns and the fact that Bob Skinner appears a new copper. You are truely fab and have never let me down – keep up the good work.

Oh for a moment there I thought you had turned into a a clone of my husband. Cyclists are his pet hate after one bashed into our car but of course it was our fault that we dared to go straight across at a crossroads( we had right of way) . She did not think we could do that. She thought you could only turn right at a crossroad. He thinks that all cyclists above the age of 16 should have to pass a cycling test and hold a licence. Bikes hould have to have an MOT and owners should have to pay road tax.

Have a good week and I am counting down the months till the next Skinner.

Agreed, and I’m also keen that cyclists under the age of 16 should pass a test.

I agree! Problem now is (imo) the cycling proficiency test isn’t run by the polis anymore, I think when they supplied this service to schools the kids believed it was “the law” (im 41 and it didn’t do me any harm etc). As for your writing…just read the last 3 Bob Skinners back to back, all, excellent. But, now have to wait for another. I should learn to pace myself. Grievous Angel was a great way to re-introduce us to Mario, Andy etc. Any spoilers for the next one? No, didn’t think so! Cheers!.
