Flush it
I am happy to say that I saw very little of the Eurovision Song Contest at the weekend, but enough to know this; there is no longer any excuse for the BBC subsidising an opportunity for the rest of Europe, (and Israel: somebody please tell me how the pluperfect **** that nation falls within our continental boundaries) to demonstrate how much it dislikes the English. I use that national description deliberately, for it is my belief that a Scottish entry would be much better treated. (And almost certainly it would be better!) There are now so many participating nations that there is a semi-final stage, but the BBC entry is granted an exemption from this and goes straight to the final. Why? Because the UK, along with Spain, France and Germany, are the biggest funders of the increasingly futile nonsense. That’s licence payers’ money I’m talking about, yours and mine, going straight down the euro-toilet.
I always believed that this nonsense at least gave some countries like Ireland the opportunity to take the mickey out of themselves (a la Jedward} but I thought that was a trait that was foreign.(pun intended) to the English until Engelbert Humperdink,
Unfortunately while I think I’d be secretly pleased to have a Scottish entry, I think as a nation we take the piss out of ourselves quite enough as it is,,,,Edinburgh Trams, Football Teams etc etc
I seem to recall that Capercaillie represented France a few years back; sad that they can’t sing for Scotland.
Yep,,then you have Gaberlunzie…a very talented folk/country duo..They derive the name from an auld Scots word for tinker/conman. They would be an appropriate choice
I will go with Craig and Charlie over them, and I’m not even a Hibbie.
It wouldn’t matter how good the UK entry was we wouldn’t stand any chance these days – it’s pure politics. Can I nominate the Borders group Scocha to represent Scotland http://youtu.be/D8rnqtzN7ms. They go down great in America – come to think perhaps the UK woukd stand a better chance in an American contest. Only Wogan ever made Eurvision worth watching, but the contest does show that we are the real winners. I listened to only half the results coming through, but, with the exception of the French announcer, the only language I heard was English!
They’re singing about leaving Scotland! Sod that. Stay and build it. (He says from Spain.)
They also sing about their love of Scotland and the Borders in particular – and here I will get a plug in for the CD I have put together for my favourite charity, Borders Talking Newspaper for the visually impaired. Scocha provide the opener with “My Borderland” followed by readings from Scott, Ogilvie and other Borders writers and songs including “Rolling Hills of the Borders,” “Peace on the Border” and many others. Available next week. Apologies for hi-jacking your page Quintin, but all in a good cause.
