Quite sensational

Hats off to the paradox that is the Scottish international rugby side. Unable to beat Casey’s Drum in the 2012 Six Nations Championship, Andy Robinson takes his men on an apparently suicidal tour of the southern hemisphere, and they beat Australia, on their own turf. Fiji and Samoa, the opposition in the two forthcoming matches, will be tough indeed, but at least our guys will go there with confidence restored.

Quite sensational indeed. I recorded it while watching the Diamond Jubilee service from St. Paul’s. The match itself made agonising viewing, even for a Scottish rugby supporter well-accustomed to the pain of following Scotland. Not a good advert for rugby, but what a battle, played in the most atrocious weather conditions, and what a result. Having parked in the Australian 22, playing downwind, for almost the whole of the first half, I believe it took Scotland over 38 minutes, 30 seconds to set foot in the Oz half in the second period. (I remember them getting the ball only twice in the second half prior to that, when they were awarded penalties). The score stood at 6-6 and through sheer grit and determination the Scots picked and drove until they forced a penalty within kicking distance… and then Laidlaw, God bless him, slotted it into the teeth of the gale. Deserves a knighthood, that man!

My poor husband was devastated. I had to spend quite some time consoling him”. But “well done, Scotland”

Norah, you might remind him that if we beat you next time, it will be three in a row, and we’ll get to keep you.

When the referee refused a stonewall penalty in the 87th minute, I thought Oh No here we go again. Was I ever so glad to be proved wrong..

The tide has turned at last…He says with fingers crossed
