Farewell, young Tom
And so farewell Richard Briers. God speed on your journey to The Good Afterlife.
I have often wondered why he didn’t really build on his early success with that seminal and much loved TV series. My best guess is that it was down to having his teeth capped. Somehow, it changed his appearance, and made him look less like the nice guy next door, and more like the bank manager you really don’t want to face across his desk.

I had the privilege of talking to Richard Briers several times at a London dentist we both used. He was exactly the same in real life as he was in The Good Life; a genuinely nice, funny guy with no airs and graces who had the enviable knack of making you feel the temporary centre of his universe.
We are all the sadder for his passing
I remember Richard Briers from the mid sixties when he was appearing at the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester (Now, sadly, long gone.) I was a lowly A.S.M. at the time and returned one cold, snowy morning to the theatre having spent hours trudging around town trying to cajole and coax the loan of props from the proprietors of local firms. As was usual for staff, I went into the theatre via the kitchen where I met Richard busy washing up some mugs. He took one look at me and said “You look half frozen. Go and sit down and I will make you a cuppa.” He made the tea and, although I have never been a tea drinker, it was delicious. I still remember that cuppa with gratitude. He truly was a lovely man.
