Oh yes?

I’ve just seen a Sky tv ALDI ad offering wine for as little as £6.99. In ALDI L’Escala you’ll struggle to pay more than €4 for the same product.

We are being ripped off.

Are you surprised? Britain is full of “party poopers”. I am worried that the announcement yesterday stating that one glass of wine is as harmful as three shots of vodka will have people doing the maths and having nine shots of vodka rather than three glasses of wine. I really wonder what these “pundits” hope to achieve.

I missed that one, Diana; Daily Mail, I assume. You live in Spain so you must realise that the key is in the grasp of the person who’s doing the pouring. I don’t drink spirits, but last time I looked at the size of English pub measures, it struck me that if you swirled a single shot around the glass it would disappear.

To me, Britain’s problem is its use of taxation as a means of health education. One it doesn’t work, and two, it penalises, disproportionately, the less well off.

In fact the article was in the Daily Telegraph, I prefer your books for reading fiction to the D.M..
Yes, we live in Spain (chilly at the moment) and we have noticed, as you probably have, that the problem drinkers are not those who drink with their meals or at home in a family setting, but those who drink in order to get drunk. Sadly this attitude seems to be led by young Britons. We are aware that during the summer in areas of town where British holiday makers are particularly catered for, pavements are not pleasant because of areas of vomit. Away from holiday times, many of these bars close down, as locals never use them, and the area is once again clean.

As far as British spirit measures are concerned, the last time I had a whisky in Glasgow, I almost asked for a clean glass at mine appeared to have been used. Then I realised that was my drink.

Your last comment is only too right., but on top of that different ‘advice’ is given from all sides, with one saying a little red wine is good for you, then the vodka comment. I just believe in moderation.

Yes, you are being ripped off but probably not by Aldi; I reckon it has something to do with the government’s prohibitive taxes, which are crippling wine exports from the south of France to Britain. Here in France, just a stone’s throw away from L’Escala, (you’d have to be pretty good at throwing stones but it’s not very far away from here), a bottle of basic local wine would cost 3 to 4 Euros in the supermarket although the price increases depending on age, “domaine,” “cuvée” and all that. However, if you go directly to the wine grower, exactly the same wine will cost about €1.50 a litre and the wine grower is still making a profit. As for the maths, politicians and statisticians et al sort them to suit themselves. I think I’ll stick to my three glasses of wine, it’s cheaper and hurts a lot less than nine shots of vodka.
