Red deal
Has anyone else been receiving automated calls from a woman telling you that you need to book a Green Deal Assessment before 2016? I have, even though I’m registered with the Telephone Preference Service and shouldn’t be receiving cold calls.
After about a dozen of these intrusions, finally I did as I was told and pressed ‘2’ to book my assessment while they are ‘in my area’. Hopefully someone will turn up at my door, so that I can tell them to fuck off, face to face. I’ve tried with the computer, but it doesn’t work.

This is Europe-wide it would seem. Having suffered numerous calls of the sort we finally said yes just to find out. I did ask them to specify that they weren’t selling anything; they said they weren’t and they would send an “expert.” The “expert” duly arrived and proceeded with his inspections. It was immediately clear that he didn’t have a clue. He was even stupid enough to say that his last job (abandoned 15 days previously) was selling sofas in a hypermarket. So much for the expert part. Then he got out all his impressive papers where you have to tick boxes; I had to help him do that because some of the questions are almost incomprehensible. Now to the “not selling you anything” bit. I had done my homework a bit before the visit so I was somewhhat prepared. He started with wind power and said you can bolt it to this side of the house, I said “no you can’t, this is the Tramontane side, not only will it go on fire but it will also take the wall down,” Oh! It turns out that the model he was proposing to take care of all our electricity needs and even earn money would have had trouble lighting 2 x 100-Watt bulbs. On to solar energy then, that didn’t last long because he had no idea what he was talking about. Now comes the kicker, what he was really up to was selling credit. At that point, I gathered up his papers, gave them back to him and threw him out of the house, not literally but almost.
Two things: I took great pleasure in wasting his time and even more pleasure in discovering that I knew more than he did. He kept having to phone his boss with loudspeaker on so we could hear – the boss told him several times to give us a unique deal! Pah!
The second is very sad: they prey on people who are not aware, not only “old” people, young people too and they all find themselves with equipment that doesn’t and can’t possibly work and a huge debt that the energy generated will never, ever reimburse.
If you have the time and you are completely immune to marketing bullshit, it’s quite amusing to take these people apart. Otherwise just tell them to **** off on the phone, which is what I do now, regardless of the product.
Good luck or have fun.
These are automated calls, Fergus. ‘Please cease and desist’ on the phone doesn’t work as there is no-one listening. You have two options; hang up, and the calls will continue, or press 2 and see what happens next.
See what happens next then. Either you’ll be amused or appalled or both, not necessarily in that order. System seems the same though. Good luck.
