I’m sure the KB version wasn’t released for comparison, some covers are better than the originals (or, at least, sell more records than the originals). However, there are always nutters like me who will compare whatever they do. In this case though, these two versions both have a smooth, velvety production that pretty much hides any kind of emotion/soul. I think the Americans call it “elevator music” and I would call it “supermarket music.” The original 45 jumped out at you, I prefer the person, the voice and lyrics “up front and in your face,” no water required. Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin come to mind immediately, Joan Armatrading too and many others. I think I’ll stick with MG’s “What’s goin’ on,” the man shines like the sun there.
