Courage

The YouGov daily panel questions are always interesting, but sometimes their purpose can be a little obscure. No ambivalence about one of yesterday’s three, however, only a little grammatical quirkiness:

‘If the UK were not a member of the EU at the moment and there were a referendum on whether we should join (on current terms) wold you vote to join or stay out?’

The result? Out of 4427 total respondents,

I would vote to join:                                28%

I would vote to stay out:                         60%

I would not vote:                                          1%

Note sure:                                                      11%

Okay, it didn’t ask for voting intentions on June 23,  but if I was part of Operation Fear this morning, I’d find that more than a little ominous.

Perhaps I were to be asked that question today I too may be in the majority, but do I want out? Certainly not. It is going to take too much unravelling; we can’t have any influence if we are not in; and I have no faith whatsoever in the #Brexit camp who appear to have no plans for their UK vision after 23rd June.

To me this is not about the future of Britain immediately after an exit. It’s about the future of Europe in ten years and beyond. Do we want to be part of a union of the unwilling and the unpredictable dominated by Germany? That question was asked 75 years ago. As far as I’m concerned the answer remains the same.. Cheerio.

Can understand that, but might we not be better inside the tent where we would stand a better chance of opposing the Germans? Simply because we are not part of the union wouldn’t stop them attempting and even succeeding in dominating, albeit not in the same way they attempted 75 years ago.

It’s not only the Germans; the Balkan nations have an awful history yet they’re being allowed into the tent. Tirana is said to have the highest concentration of BMW/Mercedes ownership of any city in Europe, most of them stolen in German and shipped there. I believe that the EU, as it will be when my two-year-old grandson turns 21, will be a horrible place of which to be a citizen. Nobody seems to be addressing the longer term future, or asking the fundamental question: what is its raison d’etre? (Sorry, I don’t speak German.)

Well, if it’s a remain vote you had better learn! What of your granddaughter, she will still be in if she remains in Spain?
