Growl!
If I had a fiver for every time I’ve been asked who I’d like to play Skinner on screen, my grandchildren would go through University without the need of student loans.
There have been many answers, and contestants, but the current favourite, and likely to be so for some time, is none other than Rory McCann, the Hound himself.
P-J Willett vs Miller vs Sanity
One day to go, and it’s really heating up out there. Not the temperature, it looks freezing. Danny Willett’s brother has really threw the cat amongst the pigeons. Or Danny under the bus…

Mixed Emotions
Just as Valderrama peeled off some of the rust in my game after seven weeks off, so too did it inspire me to dust off the cobwebs from my keyboard. It takes special places and experiences sometimes…

BBC and all that
M y buddy Mike; always an interesting read.
Still had time for an occasional walk!
Last week was another busy one. Plenty of writing and planning, but then I had to go up to London to discuss the next books.
I am currently on a two book contract. The first of the pair is written and submitted: it’s the last of the Vintener Trilogy, and deals with events ten years after Crécy. I really like it. There is a pretty high body count, but most folks are happy with that. The questions was, though, what my editor and I should look at next. Some people have been asking me to write about Agincourt, which is an appealing idea, but for that I’d have to invent a bunch of new characters and work through a different period, while many readers would expect something to follow on from the other books. They are all in the Hundred Years War, after all.

A Few Observations
More good sense from young Eddie.
Ken Brown is a nice man. His calm persona and soft tones make him truly interesting in a world where media commentators are often bellowing tripe in an effort to be heard. Ken doesn’t want to be heard. I get the impression he just likes to talk and pass on his knowledge free of any ambitions outside of personal contentment. To confirm this he offered to send me his book in the post, free of charge. I didn’t know he had released one when we spoke in the airport on my way back from Prague. I enjoyed listening to him talk about his views on putting. It was refreshing to hear someone talk about the intuitive, instinctive nature of putting, as opposed to the scientific approach we see so much of these days. I’m not saying one is right over the other, it’s just nice to have a balance of ideas…

Sniffy
A pleasant evening in the House of Lords last week, but not once was I offered a line of coke. Nor did I see any ladies of the night, not even on the terrace outside the Strangers’ Bar. What’s the world coming to?
In the midst . . .
The blog sends its sympathy and condolences to the family of Ruth Rendell, and most poignantly, to Rio Ferdinand and his children.
Music while I walk the dog
The Score – Fugees. God, am I having a good day!
Always in stock
Ron Lambert asks me when Skinner will ben his favourite bookshop.
Well, Ron, that’s a question you should really address to that shop, wherever it is. I can tell you that the entire list is in my favourite bookshop . . . www.campbellreadbooks.com . . . and that every copy leaving there is signed, yes, by me. If you’d rather have an unsigned copy, that can be arranged too.
Book In Advance – Bloody Scotland On Tour
Damn fine account, Andy
Bloody Scotland On Tour: Waterstones West End, Edinburgh, 25 November 2013
A 6pm start for this evening’s event and a walk the length of Edinburgh’s second most famous street, Princes Street (it seems appropriate when blogging about a literary event to once again query why “Princes Street” doesn’t have an apostrophe in it) to see an event about ‘Tartan Noir’ should be very appropriate at this time of year, with how early the darkness engulfs Scotland’s capital in November. The eeriness of structures like the magnificent Scott’s Monument and the castle looming over the city centre should put us in exactly the right mood for a discussion about crime. Sadly, this is not the case, as Edinburgh is using enough electricity to power a small country with the, what seems to be earlier every year, Christmas lights. People who know me will be aware that I am very prone to…

No excuse
Two and a half hours late, we made it home yesterday. The proffered explanation was air traffic difficulty in France, but that doesn’t excuse calling passengers to the gate for a flight which ground controllers must have known would be delayed, or the lack of interest in advising passengers of the developing situation.
These people may not be directly employed, but airlines must be responsible for their passengers’ happiness and comfort nonetheless.
Ken Dodd
Okay, as you’ve seen, I can post videos now. What do you think of the show so far?
I’ve been assisted in this by a WordPress guy called Phil, who has helped me through, ironing out a couple of glitches in the process. Phil has the best job title I have ever seen, and he lives up to it. WordPress call him a ‘Happiness Engineer’.
