RIP Reginald

So farewell to Fat Andy and Peter Pascoe, but most poignantly to their creator, Reginald Hill. I wish I’d met the man I still consider to be the master of the metaphor, so I could tell him how much I enjoy his work, and ask him how he came to learn how to pronounce ‘Dalziel’ correctly. I’m not being flip; I’m a Motherwell guy and I grew up next door to a high school of that very name.

I feel certain you will have already read the article in The Times today on Reginald Hill, and also the article by no less than Ron “Chopper” Harris on “that red card” but thought worth a mention to you.

Thanks but sorry, Gillian, I don’t subscribe to the Times. As for ‘Chopper’, he, Norman Hunter, and the like, besmirched the game as players, and should not be given space as commentators. There is a piece of video in existence of Harris ‘marking’ George Best. He shouldn’t have been allowed into the same stadium as Georgie, far less on the same field. It was always good to see them get theirs, for example, one blessed night when I saw Norman Hunter kicked all over Hampden Park by one Charlie Cooke.
