I’m glad you like ‘The Loner’, ‘cos I do too. And thanks for your support; seems like I’m in good company.

As for TV, there is little chance of Skinner being made into a series, as I will not allow anyone to mess about with my characters in a way that is unacceptable to me, and most production companies seem to want that right.

Having watched Rankin’s “Doors Open” last night I am included to agree with you about the hazards of TV. Whilst I enjoyed Rebus in print and on the box I found Doors Open quite boring as did my companions, who are unlikely to be rushing out to read Rankin after that.

I hope your amigos have more savvy than to condemn an author on the basis of a TV adaptation. The tweaking of the story by the screenplay team did make it lighter in the end than the book, but ‘Doors Open’ is probably the least dark of Ian’s works anyway. No bodies, and good wins in the end. Overall, I have to confess that I found it entertaining, although I did not understand how the portrait that was clearly left behind during the raid came to turn up in Gissing’s cottage.

Incidentally, that cottage raised one of my hairy eyebrows. I have a limited edition print by a talented artist from Fife, name of Sonas Maclean. It’s called ‘Smuggler’s Blues’ and it depicts that very cottage, and cove, Coldingham, I believe. Must go and verify that.

Surely Gissings took it to the cottage. But was it the original or the fake? What baffled me was how it ended up for sale in the gallery.
Thanks for the clue on the whereabouts of the cottage. Cove is the place! http://www.coveharbour.co.uk/index.html. I have been to the cliff top but not down to the harbour which is why I didn’t recognise it.
