As the year draws to its end, I am indulging myself by watching telly. Currently it’s ‘Hooray for Hollywood’ on BBC4, relatively calm after a bizarre Nicolas Cage movie on Canal +, ‘Drive Angry’. Nic is a very fine actor, so what possessed him to take that one on? Did you know that his real name is Nicolas Coppola, and he’s the nephew of the ‘Godfather’ director, Francis Ford Coppola?

we sure part ways on Nicholas Cage! Never have felt he deserved any accolades-except, of course-being related to Coppola. Such is the way of Hollywood.
But, anyway, HappyNew Year!
Come on, Pat. ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ won him a deserved Oscar and he was nominated for other gongs in ‘Adaptation’, where he played twins, ‘Honeymoon in Vegas’, ‘The Bad Lieutenant’ and ‘Moonstruck’. He should have been for ‘Con Air’, one of the all-time great action movies, where he had to deliver, dead-pan, the line ‘Put the bunny back in the box’.
Unfortunately for Nicolas his art house movies lose money while the ‘Ghost Rider’ stuff racks the cash. I stuck with ‘Drive Angry’ because I was fascinated by its bizarreness. It seems to me that he is content to be cast as a modern-day Vincent Price, in the sort of movie that has replaced the kitsch horror of his era. From what I’ve read of him he also seem to live his private life on the edge, like most of his characters.
And a Happy New Year to you also, when it comes.
My personal prejudices are at play wth Nic-does he ever wash and comb his hair? And also, his on the “edge” behaviour seems poised on insanity-not even weirdness. Guess I just don’t like HIM and his acting takes the beating. However, he played the manic lover in “Moonstruck” to a tee. The other Coppola is a woman-and not Sophia but I can’t quite recall her face or name.
You had a 50% chance of success with that guess. Sofia is proud to use her dad’s name, just as he is pleased to cast his family members. I suppose that Nic’s penchant for marrying Lisa Marie Presley was an early sign of his weirdness.
