Fitting the crime?

Before the judge pronounces ‘for doom’, a question. What will society gain by putting Chris Huhne and his woman scorned in jail,  to be heated , fed and watered by the state for however long it is. Wouldn’t seriously exemplary fines be a better deal for the taxpayer, and as effective a punishment for them?

    Or some meaningful community service.

Eight months each. Seems like a symbolic waste of time to me. I’ll bet they’ve both got their book deals signed up by now.

“Huhne is expected to start his jail sentence in Wandsworth prison. He reportedly spent the weekend buying books to take with him. Novels by Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens and Hilary Mantel were among those he chose, although he could not find Balzac’s La Comedie Humaine, which he had also wanted to bring in.” Telegraph, 12/03/13.

My heart bleeds, where on earth does he think he’s going? Some sort of hotel? Lock him down and give him a copy of “La peau de chagrin” if he wants to read Balzac and nothing else; he might learn something but I doubt it. He’ll be out in three months and back to “ducking and diving.” Meaningful community service, I don’t think so; that’s what he’s supposed to have been doing in the first place!
