Waste of time

A couple of weeks ago I had an email from SAGA, also known around our house as ‘Sex And Games for the Aged’.

Since I turned 50 I’ve been bombarded with cold-call mail from that organisation. I used them briefly for home insurance, but binned them when the first renewal premium showed a whopping increase on the rate that had won my business.

The most recent pitch promised me the best travel insurance  on the planet, with pre-existing conditions taken into account. Eileen and I have a couple of those, but they’re all historic, so I filled in an on-line form. It took them two seconds to reject my application. Given the market they target, a large chunk of that population must have medical issues on their CV, so why are they in the market at all? Beats me.

At the grand old age of 84 my mother decided she wanted to go to Canada. She had to insure through Saga because of her advanced age. They accepted her, with all her various ailments, but they wanted over £1,000 for it. I found it elsewhere for half that, and she had a grand old time in Canada. With £500 extra spending money.

Sounds like “our” AARP -seems if there is a way to milk people they’ll find it.

Oh how I can identify with this. My in-laws were refused cover as they were too old (80). When I turned 50, I was bombarded with mail offering me cheaper car insurance. In fact, they were the most expensive. Travel Insurance about 10 times more expensive than similar cover, with no screening problems. They need to look again at the market they ‘service’. Send all grandparents abroad? Not with SAGA! Rant over.

Have you tried Liberty Seguros here in Spain? We have not tried them for travel insurance, but find that both house and car are well covered for a very reasonable cost.

    No, but thanks.
